Shutdown – One Way To Slow The Deficit?

Graham’s Musings: I wonder if the fact that certain portions of the government are now shutdown will mean less spending. Not likely. Then we find out that all of this theater and waste of time gets us maybe 100 miles of additional ‘wall’. This is a huge topic in Europe – mostly in jest at American stupidity.

As you may know, Europe has its own immigration issues and that’s putting it mildly. Many people have studied and gamed this matter. A fence won’t help stop immigration anymore than a layer of aluminum foil would have saved the Titanic. The other side of the aisle pulls the same kind of stunts when their version of the establishment’s agenda goes sour. Let’s quit the binary thinking here. Instead of thinking “OK, there are two sides, one must be right”, let’s entertain the possibility that they are BOTH wrong. Neither has your interests in mind.

They’ve both proven that literally hundreds of times in just the last decade alone. Let’s also entertain the likelihood – or at least the possibility – that there is more than one way to get to the same destination. Just because the two sides disagree doesn’t make one righteous. It has been very clear for a long time now that America is being steered right out of global relevance. Look around you. The proof is everywhere. -G

WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government was expected to remain partially shut down past Christmas as the standoff deepened Saturday over President Donald Trump’s demand for funds to build a border wall with Mexico.

With Trump’s insistence on $5 billion for the wall and negotiations with Democrats in Congress far from a breakthrough, even a temporary measure to keep the government running while talks continued seemed out of reach until the Senate returned for a full session Thursday.

From coast to coast, the first day of the shutdown played out in uneven ways. The Statue of Liberty was still open for tours, thanks to funding from New York state, and the U.S. Post Office was still delivering mail, as an independent agency.
