Former President Donald Trump has been banned from delivering a closing argument at his New York civil fraud trial. Judge Arthur Engoron ruled the former president would not be allowed to speak in court as he had not agreed to the limitations imposed on his argument. These limitations included speaking only about “material facts that are in evidence” and the application of relevant law to those facts, and refraining from delivering a campaign speech or attacking the judge, his staff, or the Attorney General. The trial, brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, accuses Trump, his two adult sons, and the Trump Organization of inflating the values of real estate assets to fraudulently increase his net worth and obtain more favorable loans and other financial benefits. The judge’s decision to rescind permission for Trump to give his own closing argument came a day before the scheduled closing arguments in the trial.
