Daily Stock Pick: People's United Financial - Wednesday, February 5

A portfolio of stocks I've been building since September 3 is named Volio. It will eventually hold 52 dividend dogs. Volio is the fifth portfolio I've built (at a one dividend dog per-week pace) since 2014. Five portfolios = V for Volio!

Today I'm reviewing the third of five financial services stocks striving to join my Volio folio. This could be my twenty-third pick for Volio!

That financial services sector includes twenty industries ranging from Asset Management to 8 kinds of Banks, Credit, Exchanges, 6 kinds of Insurance, Savings, and all such financial concerns.

My subject today is a mid-cap bank - regional US firm named, People's United Financial Inc. Their trading ticker symbol is PBCT. This is my third report for People's United Financial Inc. My most recent post on PBCT report was aired on October 14, 2019. For this very Volio Folio.

People's United Financial Inc has nearly $39 billion of assets. People's United Bank is one of the top New England-based banks and among the top 50 in the U.S.

Of the bank's 405 locations, 40% are in Connecticut, where it ranks third by deposit market share. It also ranks among the top 10 in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

The bank offers brokerage, financial advisory and wealth management, and insurance services. Commercial real estate accounts for 35% of the loan book, C&I and equipment financing accounts for another 35%, and the rest is in mortgages and consumer.

The company was founded in 1842 and is headquartered in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

I use three key data points to gauge dividend equities or funds like People's United Fianical Inc:

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, several other keys will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest, or not.

Those three basic keys, however, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

PBCT Price

People's price per share closed at $15.84 yesterday. A year ago its price was $16.72. So, in the past year, its market price fell by $0.88, or just about 5.26%.

Assuming People's stock trades in the range of $14 to $18 this next year, its recent $15.84 price could rise by $1.66 to reach $17.50 by February 5, 2021, assuming upward price momentum resumes.

PBCT Dividends

People's latest declared quarterly dividend was $0.1775, payable February 15. That $0.1775  Q dividend equates to an annual payout of $0.71 and yields 4.48% at yesterday's $15.84 share price.

PBCT Gains?

Adding the $0.71 annual estimated dividend to my $1.66 estimate of People's United Financial Inc price upside shows a $2.37 potential gross gain, per share, which will be reduced by any costs to trade those shares.

As for costs, if we put a little under $1,000.00 today in People's at its recent $15.84 price, would buy 63 shares of PBCT.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale could cost us about $0.16 per share.

Subtract that $0.16 brokerage cost from the estimated $2.37 gross estimated gain per share leaves a net gain of $2.21 X 63 shares = $139.23 or a 13.25% net gain on a $997.92 investment.

Therefore, People's United Financial Inc, whose trading ticker symbol is PBCT shows a possible 13.25% net gain including a 4.48% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past year performance. The actual results remain to be seen to learn if People's United Financial Inc, is worth your time and money.
