Daily Stock Pick: CONSOL Coal Resources

A portfolio of stocks I'm building, named Ivy, holds 52 dividend dogs. Ivy is the fourth portfolio I've built (at a one dividend dog per week pace) since 2014. Four portfolios = IV!

Today I'm reviewing the fifth of five materials sector stocks this week striving to become the eighth of nine from that sector to join the Ivy folio.

That materials sector has thirteen industries all related to mining, making, and delivering essential commodities. They are: agricultural inputs; aluminum; building materials; chemicals; coal; copper; industrial metals; steel; paper; silver; specialty chemicals; gold.

Today I'm reviewing a small-cap coal company named CONSOL Coal Resources LP.Their trading ticker symbol is CCR. I last reported and selected CCR for the IVY folio on January 25, 2019.

CONSOL Coal Resources LP is engaged in the thermal coal operations in Pennsylvania.

The company's assets include interests in CONSOL energy's Pennsylvania mining complex, which consists of approximately three underground mines (Bailey Mine, Enlow Fork Mine, and Harvey Mine) and related infrastructure that produce bituminous thermal coal that is sold primarily to electric utilities in the eastern United States.

All the operations of the group are conducted at a single mining complex located in the Northern Appalachian Basin in southwestern Pennsylvania.

The company was formerly known as CNX Coal Resources LP and changed its name to CONSOL Coal Resources LP in November 2017. CONSOL Coal Resources LP was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania

I use three key data points to gauge dividend-paying equities or funds like CONSOL Coal Resources LP (CCR):

(1) Price

(2) Dividends

(3) Returns

Besides those three, several other keys will finally unlock an equity or fund in which to invest or not.

Those three basic keys, however, best tell whether a company has made, is making, and will make money.

CCR Price

CONSOL's price per share closed at $12.80 yesterday. In January its price was $17.95. In six months its price fell$5.15 or 28.7%.

Assuming CONSOL's stock trades in the range of $5.00 to $20.00 this year, CONSOL's recent $12.80 price could fall by $4.00 and go to $8.80 by January 2020.

CCR Dividends

CONSOL's latest quarterly dividend was $0.5125 paid August 15th.

That $0.5125 Q payout generates an annual payout of $2.05 yielding16.02% based on yesterday's $12.80 closing price. As price continues to drop a dividend reduction is likely.

Gains For CCR?

Adding the $2.05 annual estimated dividend to my -$4.00 estimate of Aperam's price decrease shows a negative $1.95 potential gross loss, per share, which will be further reduced by costs to trade these shares.

Say we put a little under $1,000.00 today at the $12.80 recent stock price, we'd buy 78 CONSOL Coal Resources LP (CCR) shares.

A $10 broker fee paid half at purchase and half at sale will cost us $0.13 per share.

Subtract that $0.13 brokerage cost from the estimated $1.95 gross pending loss leaves a net loss of -$2.08 X 78 shares = ($162.24) or a 16.2% net loss on a $998.40 investment.

Therefore, CONSOL Coal Resources LP whose trading ticker symbol is CCR now shows a possible net loss of 16.2% including a 16.02% dividend yield.

Four brokers track CONSOL Coal Resources LP (CCR) stock:

Two say "buy" CCR

Two say "hold" CCR

Their consensus score of 2.0 equates to "Outperform." Based on six months of price action in the Ivy Portfolio. It's a sell-out and replace. I'll report on its replacement in two weeks.

A Look at CONSOL Coal Resources LP(CCR) shows it has lost money, is losing money, and could net a 16.2% further loss including its 16.02% dividend yield. It could be more, it could be less.

The above speculation is based on past year performance. The actual results remain to be seen to learn if CONSOL Coal Resources LP(CCR) is worth your time and money.
